"Educational Chatbots: something new or history repeating?"
Monday, September 16, 2024
In September I gave a talk on this topic for "Research in the Era of Generative AI: A Hybrid Symposium for Design Justice Thinkers" at Rutgers University.
The learning sciences has produced a great deal of research on how to design educational chatbots and what to expect from current approaches using generative AI. In a panel on "Teaching Machines: Then and Now," I spoke about how today's chatbots are based on previous work on learning analytics and educational data mining, intelligent tutoring systems and cognitive tutors, and AI and behaviorism. More information about the consortium can be found on the Critical AI site. Stay tuned for group's white paper coming in 2025.
